POMBLAI: The Process
Creating this collection required an exploration into the world of Indian textiles. And while I only scratched the surface with this one, what i learned was fascinating and required sharing.
Sourcing fabric
This collection from 60lea pure linen which is manufactured in Tamil Nadu. The region has a long history of linen production, with skilled artisans and manufacturers contributing to the high quality of the fabric. The linen itself is known for its durability, breathability, and resistance to pilling. In addition, the natural fibers used to create this fabric make it an eco-friendly option for those who are conscious of their environmental impact. This collection is a testament to the beauty and versatility of linen as a fabric, and the skill of those who craft it.
Blockprinting
The print designs were carved into teak wood blocks by master carvers from the Chippa community in Bagru, Rajasthan. Blocks were then treated with oil to prepare for printing.
All fabric was handprinted by master printers from Kaivannam in Chennai. We performed color testing on natural pigments to create the perfect color for the collection and achieve consistent prints. After pinning cut fabric pieces to secure, Krishnamoorthy sir applied each print individually, carefully ensuring constistnet application and spacing. Fabric is kept in the sun to fast designs and complete printing process.
